CALAMBA is in the process of building its multi-purpose gymnasium which will be ready by next year. One of the objectives of the city is to participate in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
Former PBA coach Ariel Vanguardia, who is set to handle the team to be put up in Calamba, confirmed the news to FOX Sports Philippines.
Vanguardia, who coached the Malaysian Dragons in the Asean Basketball League and handled the Phoenix Fuel Masters in the PBA, is also running as b0ard member of Calamba.
“Magagawa yung 8,000 seater gym namin mga February 2020,” wrote Vanguardia in an exclusive online interview.
The gym will be known as Jose Rizal Gymnasium, a fitting tribute to our national hero, who was born in Calamba.
According to Vanguardia, he was already tasked by Mayor Timmy Chipeco and Congressman Jun Chipeco to handle the squad that is planning to join the MPBL in 2020.
“Nagpapa-name na nga kami this early,” added Vanguardia.
Should Calamba joins the MPBL, it would be the second team from Laguna to participate in the country’s fastest growing regional amateur basketball league put up by Senator Manny Pacquiao with PBA legend and former MVP Kenneth Duremdes serving as commissioner.
In the recently concluded Datu Cup, the Laguna Heroes was one among the 16 expansion squads which participated in the tournament won by the San Juan Knights.
