LABOR group Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP) joined the chorus of indignant Filipinos after neophyte party-list representative, Alfred de los Santos of Ang Probinsiyano was reported to have punched a waiter of Biggs restaurant in Legazpi City on Sunday.
In a statement to the media, they said, “The unfortunate incident is an illustration of how the politician, in this case, Representative De los Santos, views and treats lowly workers. They are mindlessly drowning in power and influence that they are completely detached from ordinary people, from the very people they owe for their status in society”.
It added that “We can no longer watch idly as they flaunt their social rank on ordinary people even accuse the waiter of staring at the lawmaker when he was merely performing his duties. De los Santos acts as if he is a demigod that the hoi polloi cannot look at him for they are unworthy of his presence”.
The group also demands that the full weight of law be applied and by the soon to be formed Ethics Committee of the House of Representatives.
“In light of this incident, its about time that we raise the bar of moral fortitude for all elected and appointed state officials. These abuses will not stop unless we hold them accountable and drastically impose more severe penalties”.
De Guzman also encouraged the victim, Christian Kent Alejano to file the necessary charges and to stand firm despite the far-reaching influence of the newbie lawmaker. He said that BMP is more than willing to provide him with a legal counsel.
“Ihabla niya, huwag siyang matakot. Gawin niya ito para sa kanyang sariling dignidad at sa kapakanan ng buong manggagawang Pilipino na araw-araw inaabuso at pinagsasamantalahan ng mga kagaya ni De los Santos,” the labor leader said.
