ANGELES CITY, Pampanga — Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner Willie Marcial said that athletes like basketball players can be among the best government leaders in our country because of their innate discipline, strong will, and determination.
The commissioner added that not only basketball players but all athletes are basically can become better public officials to serve our people and community.
“Kahit hindi basketbolista, basta atleta, iba ang pananaw para sa ikabubuti ng komunidad at ng kapwa tao niya, by nature kasi hindi sila pulitiko, iba ang pagsisilbi nila sa tao. Determinado sila, mataas ang level ng disiplina at may strong will at alam nila ang pamamalakad,” the PBA former statistician told RONDA Balita Online News.
Among the PBA players is Former PBA player Vergel Meneses who became famous for his air movement as “Aerial Voyager” in the early 1990s until he retired in 2006 is running for the mayoralty in Bulakan town.
He is running under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
Meneses came from the clan of Meneses who are rich fishpond owners in the town who later become local public servants loved by the people.
The aerial voyager is a distant cousin of incumbent Mayor Patrick Meneses of Bulakan.
The mayor’s late father, former Bulakan Mayor and Bulacan First District Board Member Ricardo “Ricky” Meneses is also a famous basketball player during his time.
The mayor is running as vice mayoralty running mate of his brother, Councilor Piccolo Meneses who is running for mayor in the May elections.
The former PBA player ran and lost to Mayor Meneses in the 2016 elections.
Former Pampanga Vice Governor and PBA team North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Road Warriors Coach Yeng Guiao is also running as representative of the 1st district of Pampanga.
Marcial said other than the two, there are also other PBA personalities who are also running in the coming May elections.
